Marion helped send both a man to the White House and a man to the Moon! Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States, lived his adult life in Marion where he led the famous front porch campaign from his house, which still proudly stands as a major tourist attraction. Tens of thousands of people from all across the U.S. were drawn to Marion to attend these front porch rallies, which propelled Mr. Harding to the Presidency. The Marion Power Shovel Company designed and built the massive NASA crawler-transporter used to transport the Saturn rockets from NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building to the Launchpad. In 1969, this largest self-powered vehicle in the world moved the Apollo 11 rocket to the Launchpad where it sent Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the Moon.
