A Fun Fact About
Bloomington, IL

Bloomington, Illinois, in addition to its many ties to our sixteenth president, (he practiced law here), was also the winter home for a large contingent of circus performers. By the 1880's, Bloomington's barns were home to several aerial acts, especially trapeze artists who would hone their skills, perfect their performance and then utilize the convenience of our railroads to get from town to town. This tradition lasted well into the 1950's and is still celebrated today, with the continuing efforts of Illinois State University's Gamma Phi Circus, established in 1925, making it the oldest Collegiate Circus in the United States still operating today.
