A Fun Fact About
Douglas County, NV

Between 1856 and 1876, Snowshoe Thompson delivered mail over the Sierra Nevada through the Lake Tahoe Basin to and from Sacramento to Markleeville, Woodfords, and Genoa. That is difficult enough in summer, but in winter it required the use of 12 foot wooden skis and sleeping in caves during snow storms. He won several ski competitions at Silver Mountain and served on the Alpine County Board of Supervisors and it is reported that he was never compensated for mail carrier duties. A statue of Thompson stands today in the center of Genoa.
