In 1884, the citizens of Angola established Tri-State Normal College, now Trine University.

In 1925 the citizens of Steuben County acquired and gifted 500 acres along the shores of Lake James to the Indiana Department of Conservation, now the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Those 500 acres have tripled in size and now are home to Pokagon State Park and Trine State Recreation Area.

In 2015, the community once again has an initiative that will have a profound effect on our economic future: Northern Indiana Lakes Country Enterprise Center ( PDF )
